The World Research and Innovation Convention on Engineering and Technology (WRICET 2014) was successfully held at the Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya on Tuesday, 25th November 2014 and Wednesday 26th November 2014. The theme for this year’s convention was “Advancing Technology – Innovative Minds” where the convention emphasized the exploration of innovative and creative advances, frontiers and applications of engineering and technology for a better and more sustainable and maintainable future. This hopefully that would lead to better products that are resource and energy efficient, justifiable and eco-friendly.

The convention was jointly-organised by the Federation of Engineering Institution of Islamic Countries (FEIIC), Malaysian Society for Engineering & Technology (MySET), Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Malaysia Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT- UTM).

The event initially started off with a welcoming speech from the Joint-Chair of WRICET 2014, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tinia Idaty Mohd Ghazi. She reiterated the importance through education and evolving research, such strategic issues for the human and environmental sustainability are expected to be achieved.

As a conclusion, the objective of this convention to provide a platform for active interaction and discourse for delegates to express their views, solicit opinions, share research findings and problems to pave the way for future collaborations was achieved.

Two-Day Intensive Lead Trainer Course On Outcome- Based Education

The two-day Intensive Lead Auditor Course on Outcome- Based Education (OBE) workshop was organised by Malaysian Society for Engineering & Technology (MySET) on 18th and 19th April 2015 at Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya.

The generic nature of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Engineering Programme Manual allows institutions of higher learning to explore and develop their own models and approaches to outcome-based engineering programmes. It has been over a decade now since the manual was first introduced back in 1999 and we have seen maturity of the outcome-based engineering programmes in Malaysia. It can be said that Malaysia is among the leading signatories of Washington Accord that have gone far to materialise the outcome-based education through adequate planning and implementation.

The workshop was attended by 14 participants from local universities such as Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), SEGi University, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Politeknik Melaka, and Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (Unikl Mimet).

National Engineering and Technology Convention (NETC)

MySET’s annual National Engineering and Technology Convention (NETC2015) was successfully held on 11th May 2015 at the Dahlia Room in Bangi-Putrajaya Hotel, Bandar Baru Bangi. It was the 7th NETC event in its series since the first one in 2009. The objective of NETC is to provide a platform for the presentation and exchange of ideas and experiences amongst engineering and technology professionals. This year’s convention was attended by 40 people from engineers, engineering technologists and technicians.

The theme for NETC2015 was ‘Professional Engineering Technologist’, which is a very important topic for MySET. This is because on our journey to attain a developed country status, Malaysia will undeniably benefit from contributions of Engineering Technologists (ET). However, in order for our industry to compete at the global level, ET graduates, upon finishing their degrees, need to be developed and nurtured further to engage the latest and relevant knowledge and skills as they advance. Becoming professional ET will enable them to meet this requirement upon completion of certain certifications. Furthermore, more and more industries are seeking certified professionals to ensure they can provide good and competitive service, thus there is a need for ET professionals.

The keynote session was followed by the MySET-Iktisas Excellence Student Award 2015 which is an initiative under MySET’s Young Professionals Group. The recipients of the award were Zukhairi Bin Md Rahim, Bachelor in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Mohamad Redzuan Ahmad Jakil, Bachelor in Petroleum Engineering from Universiti Technology Malaysia. They received a certificate and RM1,000 each, sponsored by Iktisas Ingenieurs Sdn Bhd. The award was delivered to the recipients by Prof. Ir. Megat Johari Megat Mohd Noor, the Secretary General of MySET. And with that NETC2015 was successfully concluded. The convention ended with a coffee and networking session.
