1 Billion Dollar Donation Campaign to Rebuild Gaza
The 1 Billion Dollar Donation Campaign to Rebuild Gaza was recently held on 24th January 2015 at Shaftsbury Asteria, Cyberjaya. The event was organized by The Arab and International Commission to Build Gaza and co-organized by Malaysian Society for Engineering and Technology (MySET) as well as Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE). Other supporters of this big event were Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia (QFM), Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM), Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF), Lifeline 4 Gaza (LL4G), Palestinian Cultural Organization Malaysia (PCOM), Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM), Paletinians Students Association (PSA), Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) and Pertubuhan Permuda GEMA Malaysia (GEMA).
The event was officiated and launched by the patron of the campaign, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. In his speech, he urged us to standunited and rise to the occasion for the reconstruction of Gaza and Palestine. This campaign is a keen response to the call for the need to rebuild Gaza’s infrastructure in various sectors including health, housing, agriculture, water, sewerage system, electrical power supply, telecommunication and manufacturing. Donors for all the affected sectors were needed in order to rebuild Gaza to the way that it used to be if not better.
MySET Reconstruction of Gaza: Portable Cabin Project
The launching of Reconstruction of GAZA “House 4 GAZA” campaign was successfully held at the Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya on Monday, 20th October 2014. The launching was jointly organized by MySET and Humanitarian Care Malaysia Berhad (HCM) formerly known as Aqsa Sharif. HCM was established on 16th July 2014 and is an agency that manages the funds and donations for Palestine.
The campaign was to collect donations to assist Gaza by providing temporary shelters in the form of portable cabins. MySET is tasked to coordinate the fundraising in Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan with a target of USD 3 million.
The project was officially launched by YB Dato’ Seri Hj. Fadhillah Hj Yusuf, Minister of Works, Malaysia who is the Reconstruction of Gaza Project Patron. MySET has already received a mock cheque for RM650,000 from HCM and some RM550,000 from various donors led by PLUS Berhad, bringing the total to RM1.2 million, a good figure towards the target of RM3.2 million or USD1 million. The Minister in his speech and his press conference with Astro Awani after the launch called for more companies to come forward to contribute to this initiative. Other media members from Bernama, Harian Metro and Utusan Malaysia also came to cover this event.
MySET & HCM MoU Signing Ceremony for Reconstruction of Gaza
In August 2014 MySET was invited to attend a meeting called by the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic Countries (FEIIC) in Istanbul. The meeting noted that 460,000 Gazans are currently homeless and living in tents due to the recent Israeli aggression. In view of the coming cold winter, the meeting resolved to assist Gaza by providing temporary shelters in the form of portable cabins. FEIIC estimated that each cabin would cost USD 2,000. FEIIC has identified two suitable manufacturers – one in Jordan and another in Turkey for the project. FEIIC decided to raise USD 20 million to support the project.
In view of Humanitarian Care Malaysia Berhad (HCM)’s vast experience and integrity with charity works in Palestine, it was decided that MySET was to sign an MoU with HCM to generally promote and strengthen the friendly relations existing between both parties, and more specifically to promote co-operation in the areas of reconstruction of Gaza and activities of interest to Gaza and Palestine. On 2nd October 2014, MySET welcomed representatives from HCM; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hafidzi Mohd Noor and Ir. Dr. Selamat Aliman to the MySET office. MySET was represented by Prof. Dato’ Abang Abdullah Abang Ali, Assoc. Prof. Ir Ahmad Tamby Kadir and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Din Subari.
